As a dance teacher for the past 20 years, I have learned valuable lessons that have made me the kind of leader I am today. Dance is more than just a form of art or physical activity. It's a medium through which one can learn various skills, traits, and behaviors that are essential in life.
Through dance, I teach people how to strive towards their goals and work hard to hone their skills and talents. While your talents may open doors for you, it's your diligence, communication, behavior, and willpower that keep you there.
Over the years, many of my former students have reached out to me for advice, suggestions, or just to talk. I have developed deep and meaningful relationships with them that have made a lasting impact on their lives.
One of the biggest obstacles people face is the influence of external factors. Often, they worry about what others think of them or what the world considers important, instead of creating and nurturing their own desires and goals.
Dance teaches us that we cannot delegate success. We cannot ask someone else to dance for us or go to the gym on our behalf. Dancing requires discipline, hard work, and emotional connection with our body and music. It teaches us that we cannot fake it; we have to put in the effort to achieve our goals.
As a dance teacher, I have seen parents project their own goals or fears onto their children. Sometimes, they push their children to pursue something they may not have the talent or inclination for. Other times, parents are afraid of their children's success and sabotage their growth.
Children need to fail to learn and grow. Dance is a space where children should be encouraged to try new things, fall, get back up, experiment, play, and connect with themselves and others. It teaches them the importance of attention to detail, setting artistic and creative goals, and striving towards them.
One of the unique lessons that dance teaches is "Knowledge of Self." Through this, dancers learn to inquire, learn and develop themselves in order to understand themselves better. Only when you know yourself can you accept yourself, and then others will accept you for who you are.
Dance also teaches proper posture and alignment, which is essential to prevent injury and improve technique. This aligns with body language and helps us adapt to different situations and cultures.
In conclusion, dance teaches us valuable lessons that go beyond physical activity or art. It helps us become well-rounded individuals with essential life skills, traits, and behaviors. As a dance teacher, I have learned to become a better leader, mentor, and guide for my students, and I continue to strive to be the best that I can be.
